Brown family papers [manuscript], 1745-1888, (bulk 1786-1888).

The collection contains a copy of a 1745 survey and two additional surveys, ante 1760 and 1783, of Brown land on Moorman's River, Albemarle County, and accounts, later surveys, indentures and legal documents of Albemarle County Sheriff, Bezaleel Brown, 1786-1838. The papers also contain the correspondence, 1845-1859, of Colonel William T. Brown, chiefly with Deane and Brown, commission merchants, Richmond, re the marketing of his wheat and tobacco, together with other bills, receipts and Albemarle County tax notices. There is also a mathematics and surveying notebook, 1858, of Bezaleel G. Brown, a student at Rocky Bluff Academy, used for farming accounts, 1859-1861. There is Civil War correspondence from Bezaleel G. Brown, I Company, 7th Virginia Infantry, and J.W. Brown, D Company, 49th Regiment. They write about camp life, high prices, poor and scarce food, illness, boxes from home, and rumors of battles and troop movement. Several letters discuss Bezaleel's hopes for exchange after being wounded and made prisoner in July of 1863. Of interest is an account of five members of a Rappahannock County family that fired on a conscripting squad killing a sergeant.
